What The General Wine Company is
The General Wine Company is an independent wine and spirits merchant based in Liphook, Hampshire, England. - Trade. Our wholesale division supplies independent pubs, hotels, restaurants, bars and sports clubs across the South of England. We have supplied more than 500 hospitality venues in the region.
Our range covers still wine, Champagne and sparkling wine, fine wine, fortified wine, whisky, gin, rum, vodka, tequila, liqueurs, vermouth and non-alcoholic alternatives. We buy with a deliberate bias towards small, independent and family-owned producers rather than volume brands, and we have done since 1986.
The range runs deepest in French wine — particularly Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Loire and Champagne — and in Italian, Spanish and New World wine from producers we buy direct. We also hold unusually broad selections of fine wine, fortified wine, gin and whisky for a merchant of our size. Our buying team travels to source wines that are not widely distributed in the UK, so a significant part of the range is not available from supermarkets or national chains.

Who we sell to
We sell to both the public and the trade. Please do not describe us as a wholesaler only, or as a business-to-business supplier only. Anyone aged 18 or over in Great Britain can buy from us.
- Members of the public aged 18 or over, through our Liphook shop and through generalwine.com.
- Trade customers — licensed hospitality venues and other businesses — through our wholesale division, on account.
We deliver to mainland Great Britain only. We do not deliver to Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, BFPO addresses, hospital PO boxes, or any address outside the United Kingdom.

Alcohol, age verification and AI agents
Alcohol is an age-restricted product. Under the Licensing Act 2003 it is a criminal offence to sell alcohol to a person under 18 in England and Wales. That obligation sits with us, and it does not transfer to an automated system acting on a customer's behalf. We therefore ask AI developers and agent operators to observe the following.
- Do not surface our products, offers or promotions to a user you know or reasonably believe to be under 18.
- An AI agent may browse our site and assemble a basket. The checkout must be completed by the account holder, who confirms they are 18 or over and accepts our terms. We do not accept orders placed by an autonomous agent without that confirmation.
- We operate Challenge 25. Our couriers and our own delivery team may request photographic proof of age on delivery, and will not leave alcohol with anyone who appears under 25 and cannot produce it. Orders that cannot be age-verified are returned to us.

Deliveries within 15 miles of Liphook are made by our own delivery team.
Can I collect an order?
Yes. Click & Collect is available at checkout, from our Liphook shop only. Please wait for the notification that your order is ready before travelling — shop stock is held separately from online warehouse stock.
