But what is Beaujolais Nouveau Day?
Born in the rolling hills of Beaujolais (between Mâcon and Lyon at the southern limit of Burgundy), this festivity started as winemakers celebrated the end of harvest with a first taste of their brand-new wine. What began as a local tradition quickly went global – with races to deliver the first bottles by all sorts of methods, hot air balloon, Concorde, even elephants! Now tens of millions of bottles of the new Beaujolais Nouveau vintage are shipped worldwide each season.
Our Beaujolais Nouveau Pick for 2025
Jean-Michel Dupré’s vineyard sits above the village of Beaujeu, in the heart of Beaujolais - a picturesque wine region located just south of Burgundy and north of Lyon.
When Jean-Michel inherited the estate from his father, it spanned only 2 hectares. Since then, he has transformed the old farm buildings into a working winery and expanded the estate with carefully chosen plots in Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages, Morgon, and Régnié.
Deeply committed to environmental stewardship, he practices organic viticulture and keeps sulphite use to a minimum during winemaking. Over time, he has been steadily moving toward full organic certification; though his Nouveau is not yet officially certified, it is produced following organic principles.
A difficult vintage this year - a few areas suffered from hail damage in May and a generally humid Spring encouraged mildew. Extremely hot temperatures in July amd August with hardly any rain caused some stres and finally there have been heavy downpours in late August and early September. As a result, yields are lower than usual, but quality is up with super ripe grapes going into this year’s Nouveau!
The Wine
Made from 100% Gamay grapes and crafted with carbonic maceration, Beaujolais Nouveau is bottled just weeks after harvest. The result is a juicy, vibrant, easy-drinking red that’s all about fuN, freshness and a dose of French charm.
